Learning Disabilities and College Planning

Learning disabilities are usually found in more than 10% of high school students.  Learning disabilities make college planning even more complicated than it already is.  However, there are colleges and universities that have been and will continue to be places where students with learning disabilities can be successful.

Some colleges have many students with learning disabilities and provide excellent support to help these students succeed.  Lynn University in Florida, West Virginia Wesleyan in West Virginia and Curry College and Dean College in Massachusetts to mention just a few.  Landmark College in Vermont is exclusively for students with learning disabilities and has one of the best programs available.  Even some of the most competitive schools like Brown and Stanford have programs that has worked well for students with learning disabilities.

Much of the information on college planning for students with learning disabilities is confusing.  Sometimes it is not even accurate.  Helping your student find a college based on what you read or what a school website reports can be a mistake, especially for students with learning disabilities.  It is important to find a college that meet the needs of your particular student.  Good college assistance is essential for a college match.

Susie Watts is a college planner who understands these specific needs. She assists students who have learning disabilities with test prep for the SAT and ACT tests.  She also helps students find a college that will offer the best opportunities for a successful experience.  Susie can help your family evaluate the programs that are available at individual schools. She can advise you as to which ones are suitable for your student.

"Allison has always struggled in school because of learning disabilities. Working with you to improve her test scores and getting such great college assistance made such a difference.  You helped her feel like she could be successful in college.  Her freshman year is going well and finding a school with the support services she needed has really helped. Thanks for all of your time with college applications.  P.S.  We could not have managed without your patience and college planning."
